World Commission on Environmental Development defined sustainable development “as a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investment, the orientation of technological development and institutional change are made consistent with the future as well as present needs.” The concept involves economic, social, and environmental dimensions. In the last years, sustainable machining has gained increasing importance in the context of the environmental dimension. In general, when we deal with machining, several pollutants are produced which need to be properly handled in order to protect the environment. Environmental friendly machining attempts to minimize consumption of the cutting fluids and energy. The recycling of cutting tools and chips is another issue with great importance in the sustainable machining. The purpose of this book is to present a group of examples exemplifying research in sustainable machining. Chapter 1 of this book provides impr
