Preface
Over the years, whenever I have been asked about what I do, I find myself telling complex stories of people and ideas and projects, and the stories can seem to be about different things, yet they are all connected for me and have a clear thread. In writing this book I present the whole picture. My story begins in my teenage years growing up with a father, Karamjit S Gill (Founding Editor of AI & Society), who was passionate about how technology can be used to help people who are disadvantaged and marginalised in society. He created two amazing national and European funded projects, one for children with learning difficulties, Computer Aided Animated Arts Theatre (CAAAT) at the University of Brighton, UK, and the other for minority women in Brighton (PAROSI – which means neighbour in Hindi), both based on fundamental principles of enabling the disadvantaged to engage in society and for society to engage with them, as equals. Where others may have conducted their projects in the buildings and institutions of disabled children, my father brought the children to the university and hired unemployed artists, teachers and musicians, to work with his computer science and AI students to develop technologies with the teachers and parents of the disabled children.
