Foreword When Springer Verlag Wi en New York asked me to become editor of a new book series on plastic surgery, the idea appealed to me as I recognized the chance it offered to fill what I felt to be a vacuum despite the manifold publications covering this branch of surgery. On the basis of one volume per year, our aims are threefold: First, the contents of each volume will concentrate on a single topic; a topic that is either new on plastic surgery or is undergoing significant changes. When it is a question of establishing new standards, the approach will be scientific. Second, the relatively narrow topic chosen as subject-matter for each volume will be described and discussed in all its facets. The description of surgical techniques will be so exact that the reader will find each single detail necessary for his/her daily work clearly presented. Authors will be selected for their competence in the selected field, and their contributions will represent the most up-to-date view either based on individual research or
