Abstract Glass and metal have wide applications in various industries due to their excellent properties. To make the most use of their properties and enlarge their applications, it is important to bond the glass and metal. Many bonding methods of glass and metal in recent years are reviewed in this article. The advantages and deficiencies of different bonding methods are discussed. The main problems between glass and metal in bonding process are proposed, and some suggestions to solve these problems are introduced. Finally, the development direction of bonding methods for glass and metal in the future is discussed. Keywords Glass . Bonding . Metal . Progress
1 Introduction With the development of industrial areas, such as aerospace, metallurgy, and materials and mechanical engineering, the application of single material is not satisfied in our actual life. We usually need the complex parts which are composed of two or more kinds of materials to satisfy our actual requirements [1–5]. Given that the properties of glass and metal are different, the bonding between glass and metal will be a challenge. The glass has many excellent properties, such as high compressive strength, good corrosion resistance, and good optical property. However, the application of glass is restricted due to the properties of brittleness and low impact [6–8]. Metal has good mechanical property and ductility [9]. As a kind of metal material, aluminum alloy is widely used in various fields of industry, such as automobile and aerospace [10, 11]. The bonding between glass and metal can enlarge the applications of glass in many industrial areas, so the bonding between glass and metal is very important. The joining between glass and

metal is needed in many fields, such as aerospace industry, new sensor, windows, fuselage undercarriage, semiconductor devices, vacuum solar thermal panel, vacuum seal connector, solid oxide fuel cell, and microelectronics-mechanical system [12–16]. With the wide applications of glass in recent years, the methods of bonding glass and metal have developed continuously. At present, the methods of bonding glass and metal mainly contain brazing [2], laser welding [17], matching sealing [18], anodic bonding [19], cementing [20], and other methods. Even if the joining technology has achieved great progress, some questions still existed, such as atomic structure, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), wettability, and residual stress [21, 22].
