Preface

The widespread use of Digital Communication and Storage is one of the most salient aspects of our world, and error control coding (ECC) is a very important part of that technology. The subject of ECC has grown tremendously from its modest inception at the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century to the level of sophistication and performance we enjoy today. Without all this work, the voyage to the “digital land” promised by Claude Shannon wouldn’t have been possible. A detailed coverage of all the different aspects of the field would require a volume similar to the Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary, a work that would be more suitable for reference than for study. This book is not meant to be an encyclopedia of ECC. Rather it aims at providing a sound foundation for the basic concepts of ECC to newcomers to the field, selecting a few topics that I consider fundamen
