It was the coldest December since 1996 for England and Wales for maximum temperatures. Minimum temperatures were well below normal across almost all of the UK, by as much as 1.5 deg C. in some western areas. It was the coldest December since 1995 for N Ireland, and since 2001 for both Scotland, England and Wales. Rainfall was below or well-below normal in most areas, only around 50% of normal over par ts of England and Wales, but locally 150% in eastern Scotland. Sunshine was above normal vir tually everywhere, approaching double the normal amount in some parts of England.

1 District values for each element are computed using all available climate stations, excluding rooftop sites for minimum air temperature. The values in the table may not be compatible with other time series (eg. Central England Temperature, England and Wales Rainfall). 2 Highest maximum and lowest minimum air temperatures for each district are determined by calculating 95 percentiles. 3 Raindays are the number of days during which the total precipitation is at least 0.2mm.
