Anomalies are with respect to the 1961-90 averaging period. Average daily maximum temperatures ranged from about 1 deg C below average across south-western areas of the UK to about 1 deg C above average across eastern coastal areas of England. Average daily minimum temperatures were generally 1 to 2 deg C above average across the UK. It was a very wet month across much of the UK with widespread flooding repor ted in Northern Ireland and parts of eastern Scotland. Nothern Ireland had its wettest August in a series back to 1914. It was also an exceptionally dull month across much of the UK, with only the far north of Scotland recording above average sunshine

1 District values for each element are computed using all available climate stations, excluding rooftop sites for minimum air temperature. The values in the table may not be compatible with other time series (eg. Central England Temperature, England and Wales Rainfall). 2 Highest maximum and lowest minimum air temperatures for each district are determined by calculating 95 percentiles. 3 Raindays are the number of days during which the total precipitation is at least 0.2mm.
