Reynolds Risk Score http://www.reynoldsriskscore.org/ This risk calculator designed specifically for women incorporates the standard risk factors (eg, cholesterol, family history, blood pressure) but also adds HS-CRP. The website is fairly simple and does not require registration. The sponsor of the website is unclear and could possibly be the C-reactive protein organization “CRP Health.”

Go Red for Women http://www.goredforwomen.com/ This well-done site is hosted by the American Heart Association. Go Red for Women is designed specially for women and does not target health care providers. The user can access a “Go Red Heart Checkup” that assesses cardiovascular risk. Accurate cholesterol panel and blood pressure numbers result in a more useful risk prediction. Some national sponsors are featured on the web page. Registration is not required, although the site does ask for the user’s state and zip code to perform the risk assessment.

Epocrates http://www.epocrates.com/ This is one of the oldest and most established sites for handheld medical databases. Initially Palm operating software only, Epocrates now supports Windows Mobile. An extensive free offering includes a Rx program (Epocrates Rx), and the site provides many medical and risk calculators. Pay versions add additional capabilities, including differential diagnoses and laboratory values. Use of software requires registration. CME credits can be earned online or via the user’s handheld device. Users can also earn honorarium for completing surveys if enrolled in their survey program. Finally, Epocrates has programs to assist in purchasing handheld devices preloaded with their software.

Women’s Health http://www.womenshealth.gov/hearttruth/ This site is sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services. Women’s Health works with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to provide many offerings for health professionals, including CME and CEU opportunities. The website features downloadable fact sheets, tools, and guides, including options to download to a handheld device (both Palm and PocketPC operating systems supported). Registration is not required.
