In the Old Testament, Job’s faith is tested by a terrible blistering disease that assails his skin. “From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head,” he is blanketed with boils. Of his plight, he laments, “I am decaying like a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.” To patients who developed pemphigus vulgaris throughout history, the story of Job must have come to mind, though unlike Job, their predicament was almost universally lethal.
