You will have noticed that I have dedicated this book to my mother. It was her gift to me that I should learn all that I needed to know on how to survive in the world, so that I can ultimately succeed. Likewise, dear readers, it is my gift to you that I should impart with my own knowledge, to help you survive as a research scientist in an increasingly demanding and competitive world. Nowadays, scientists are expected to do so many different things, and being a research scientist will mean the need for you to be more than just technically able. Someone once asked me as to why I decided to refer to this book as a survival guide. Why just survive? Why not flourish/thrive/prosper instead? My answer to this is that, in order for you to flourish/thrive/prosper, you must first learn the basics on how to survive. However, I do not want you to only survive and survive miserably. I want you to survive as a research scientist and, at the same time, find self- fulfilment as a human being. The purpose of this book is to teach you core skills not often taught at school or university.
