You will have noticed that I have dedicated this book to my mother. It was her gift to me that I should learn all that I needed to know on how to survive in the world, so that I can ultimately succeed. Likewise, dear readers, it is my gift to you that I should impart with my own knowledge, to help you survive as a research scientist in an increasingly demanding and competitive world. Nowadays, scientists are expected to do so many different things, and being a research scientist will mean the need for you to be more than just technically able. Someone once asked me as to why I decided to refer to this book as a survival guide. Why just survive? Why not flourish/thrive/prosper instead? My answer to this is that, in order for you to flourish/thrive/prosper, you must first learn the basics on how to survive. However, I do not want you to only survive and survive miserably. I want you to survive as a research scientist and, at the same time, find self-­ fulfilment as a human being. The purpose of this book is to teach you core skills not often taught at school or university. Hence, this book will be especially useful for those students who are about to embark on a Master’s or PhD program in a
