First report of fatal colon cancer?: case report A woman underwent three egg-retrieval cycles within a few months. The retrieval protocol used included SC leuprorelin 250µg twice daily for 2–3 weeks [actual duration not stated], menotropin [Pergonal] 3 amps/day [concentration and duration not stated], and IM chorionic gonadotropin 10 000 units [duration and frequency not stated]. Four years later, at 29 years of age, she reported abdominal cramps. Colonoscopy failed due to severe intestinal obstruction; a subsequent CT scan revealed peritoneal carcinomatosis, as well as tumour involvement of her colon and both ovaries. Biopsy histologically confirmed widespread colon cancer. The woman underwent chemotherapy, surgery, and palliative radiotherapy for bone and brain metastasis. Despite treatment, she died, at 31 years of age, in July 2003*. Author comment: "One cannot rule out the possibility that my daughter’s cancer may have been one of the unfortunate consequences of her decision to donate her eggs. . . Virtually all of the published reports have suggested that given time, an association between the exogenous gonadotropins and various cancers may eventually be demonstrated." * This case was reported by the patient’s mother, who is a physician. » Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase, Medline and Embase did not reveal any previous case reports of colon cancer associated with chorionic gonadotropin, leuprorelin or menotropin. The WHO ADR database contained eight reports of colon cancer associated with leuprorelin but none associated with chorionic gonadotropin or human menopausal gonadotropin (preferred base of menotropin).
