Normally, one expects that this d i l e m m a c o u l d b e s o r t e d out a t l o w t e m p e r a t u r e s w h e r e D s / D v , a n d t h u s t h e c r i t i c a l v a l u e of p * i s much larger, except for the fact that in a Cu-H syst e m D s i s m a r k e d l y s u p p r e s s e d b e l o w a b o u t 6 0 0 ~ %rs T h i s m e a n s t h a t t h e m a g n i t u d e of p * m a y a c t u a l l y b e c o n s i d e r a b l y l e s s t h a n t h e 10 p v a l u e e s t i m a t e d a b o v e for the high temperatures regime and volume diffusion could again be the dominant mechanism at very low temperatures. This point can be demonstrated by r e c a l l i n g t h a t p * = 2 D s S / 3 D v 17 w h e r e 5 = t h i c k n e s s of t h e s u r f a c e d i f f u s i o n l a y e r .
