The UN declaration of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) for the 1990s was a major step forward in drawing the attention of various nations to vulnerabilities from natural disasters. Among other things, the IDNDR effort institutionalized high-level efforts within the United Nations and fostered a new strategy for disaster reduction.
