Hyaluronic acid Eye disorders: case report
A 22-year-old woman developed oedema of the left upper eyelid, complete ptosis of eyelid, conjunctival erythema, ophthalmoplegia, corneal and retinal oedema, dilated pupil and loss of vision following treatment with hyaluronic acid. The woman received hyaluronic-acid gel injection into her forehead [indication and dosage not stated]. After 1 hour of injection, she developed sudden loss of vision (no light perception) in her left eye. Subsequent examination showed oedema of the left upper eyelid, conjunctival erythema, complete ptosis left upper eyelid, ophthalmoplegia, corneal and retinal oedema, dilated pupil and intraocular pressure of 6mm Hg. Then, angiogram showed absence of the left ophthalmic artery. An MRI revealed extraocular muscle enlargement and cerebrospinal fluid pooling around the optic nerve. It was concluded that, her opthalmic symptoms were related to retrograde embolisation of hyaluronic acid gel into the left ophthalmic artery [outcomes not stated]. Cen L-P, et al.
