Acute renal failure and myelosuppression: case report A 30-year-old woman developed acute renal failure and myelosuppression following treatment with mitomycin for disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis. The woman was diagnosed with disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis. Subsequently, she underwent cytoreductive surgery including total hysterectomy, distal gastrectomy, followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) using mitomycin 15 mg/m2. During the procedure, mitomycin was dissolved in 3L of normal sodium chloride [saline] heated to 41–42°C. The procedure lasted for 16 hrs. Post-operatively, she developed myelosuppression and acute renal failure associated with mitomycin. Her leucocyte count dropped to less than 50/mm3. The woman was treated with haemodialysis and filgrastim. Subsequently, leucocyte count stabilised and she was discharged after 1 month of HIPEC. At a follow up of 6 months, she appeared well. Author comment: "Postoperatively, the patient developed acute renal failure and myelosuppression." "However, there have been reports of systemic toxicity with mitomycin [MMC], especially neutropenia and renal failure." Rana AKS, et al.
