Mitomycin Corneal disorders: 8 case reports

In a study of 18 patients, who underwent pterygium surgery and were referred between March 2005 and July 2010, 4 men and 4 women aged 37–67 years were described, who developed corneal perforation, scleromalacia or dellen following intra-operative treatment with mitomycin for primary pterygium [dosages not stated]. The patients, who were diagnosed with primary pterygium (right or left nasal), were scheduled for Bare sclera surgery. Intraoperatively, they were treated with topical mitomycin. However, 2–14 months following surgery, the patients developed corneal perforation (n=3), scleromalacia (n=1), dellen and scleromalacia (n=2), dellen, scleromalacia and corneal perforation (n=1) or scleromalacia with corneal perforation (n=1). Subsequently, the patients underwent amnion patch therapy, lubrication, corneal grafting or conjunctival flap placement procedure that resulted in improvement. Onay MP, et al.
