Activity Patterns in Small Mammals An Ecological Approach
Environmental conditions change considerably in the course of 24 h with respect to abiotic factors and intra- and interspecific interactions. These changes result in limited time windows of opportunity for animal activities and, hence, the question of whe

Preface Stefan Halle and Nils Chr. Stenseth
The study of animal activity behaviour represents a small but active field of research, partly relating to ecology, but somewhat isolated from the main ecological developments. Modern ecology, focusing on the performances of individuals, assumes, nonetheless, some understanding of individual activity patterns, but pays little implicit attention to the study of activity behaviour and the evolutionary ecology of temporal strategies. Our purpose with this book is to help to bridge this gap - or, to put it differently: we aim at seeing the activity patterns of i
