REPORT

Alfred University Chapter Sponsors Distinguished Lecturer Among other activities during 1988, the Alfred University Chapter of the Materials Research Society sponsored a distinguished lecturer, Dr. James Corbett from S.U.N.Y. Albany. His lecture, entitled "Hydrogen in Silicon," was very interesting, and being open to all the student body, was well attended. The Chapter also undertook and is continuing an ambitious project at the University to organize display cases highlighting various products from local industrial companies. Different types of ceramics (high temperature, electronics, whitewares, etc.) will be grouped together and displayed in the hallways of the engineering buildings. The Chapter joined with other groups at Alfred to plan and participate in "Engineering Week," and sponsored an open house and gave guided tours of the research labs on campus. Several Alfred Chapter members attended the MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. Four members presented posters and all attended the university chapter mixer as well as other events. The Alfred Chapter has also volunteered to initiate and publish the MRS University Chapter Newsletter which will be circulated to all of the Chapters prior to the Spring and Fall Meetings. The newsletter will be published by Andrew Norris and Eric Groat.

Upcoming Events In 1989 the Alfred Chapter intends to increase the number and scope of its activities. Trips to nearby research facilities (Kodak and Cornell research centers) and another distinguished speaker are being planned. The Chapter also hopes to increase its membership, both in number and diversity. In addition to plans for "Engineering Week," held at the end of February, recreational activities are being organized in addition to the educational ones. The Chapter also hopes to use its MRS travel grant either to send one member to the MRS Spring Meeting in San Diego or to rent a van to transport members to the MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. The Alfred University Chapter is also looking forward to being involved in the planning and publishing of the initial MRS University Chapter Newsletter. The intent is to publish a first-rate newsletter that is both informative and timely.
