Lemont, Illinois, USA:: Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory in collaboration with scientists at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have developed a particle-level cathode coating for lithium-ion batteries that will extend their battery life and increase safety for consumers. With the polymer coating made from poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), the cathode is completely protected from oxidation that that can occur after operating at a high voltage. Batteries can operate at 4.6 V at the cell level, compared to 4.2 V of today’s batteries, and bring significant cost savings for manufacturers, as well as consumers.
