Fatal acute liver failure: case report A 48-year-old woman developed fatal acute liver failure while receiving isoniazid for tuberculous pleurisy. The woman started receiving 1 tablet/day of isoniazid 300mg on 25 December 2008. She was also receiving rifampicin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide and propranolol. On 15 January 2009, she developed nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. On 27 January, she was admitted with elevated levels of ALT, AST, GGT and bilirubin. Antituberculars were discontinued on 28 January; however, she subsequently developed acute liver failure. Fifteen days after admission, she died. Author comment: "Analysis of the case report shows that [acute liver failure] is a serious undesired reaction, serious in terms of causing the death of the patient." Radovic VV.
