Most Africans of my generation were born in rural areas, and the connection to the forests was not a romantic one. Forests were places of spiritual significance and a source of many life-supporting goods and services such as water, food, medicine, energy, and building materials. I personally experienced the multiple benefits of forests when, as a young person, I slept in a hut built completely out of materials collected from the forests.
