MRS and ACS Sections in New York Plan Meeting on Frontiers in Materials Science The Western New York Section of the Materials Research Society and the Rochester Section of the American Chemical Society are planning a meeting on "Frontiers in Materials Science: Chemistry and Technology," October 14-15, 1991 at the University of Rochester. The first day's events include an afternoon poster session and mixer, and an evening banquet and plenary address by Russell Messier of Pennsylvania State University on "Diamond: Pushing and Pulling." Thesecond day will feature three topical symposia with invited speakers, including: • Electronic Ceramics: Donald C. Brad-

ley, Queen Mary and Westfield Collège, University of London, "Metallo-Organic Precursors for the Déposition of lnorganic Electronic Materials"; David A. Payne, University of Illinois at UrbanaC h a m p a i g n , "Molecular Design of Heterometallic Precursors for Electrical Ceramics by Sol-Gel Methods";and Rishi Raj, Cornell University, "Bonding Metals to Ceramics." • Polymers and Composites: James O'Reilly, Eastman Kodak, "Organic-Inorganic Polymer Composites"; and Samson A. Jenekhe, University of Rochester, "Molecular Engineering and Processing of Nonlinear Optical Polymers for Photonic Switching." • Electronic Materials: Gary Wicks, University of Rochester, "Growth of Optoelectronic Materials by Molecular Beam Epitaxy"; and Willian Grande, Eastman

Kokak, "Some Fabrication Issues in lntegrated Optics and Optoelectronics." Poster papers are being solicited on the following topics: surface science, fabrication and characterization of thin films, coatings, structural and electronic ceramics, catalysis, polymers, composites, plasma and beam processing, imaging science, theory/calculations, and molecular design of electronic materials. Abstracts are due September 14,1991 to one of the organizers listed below. For more information or to submit an abstract, contact: Lisa DeLouise, Xerox, 800 Phillips Rd., M / S 114-41D, Webster, NY 14580, phone (716) 422-5818, fax (716) 422-1035; or Henry Gysling, Eastman Kodak, Research Laboratories Bldg. 82C, Rochester, NY 14650-2111, phone (716) 477-6835, fax (716) 477-6498. 11

UPCOMING CONFERENCES Strasbourg to Host 15th International Symposium on the Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management Strasbourg, France will host the 15th International Symposium on the Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management. The symposium will be held November 47,1991 as part of the European Materials Research Society's 1991 Fait Meeting. The symposium is being sponsored by E-MRS, MRS, and also the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), the Councilof Europe, and other organizations. This year's symposium will focus on the science underlying waste forms (vitreous, bitumen, ceramic, spent fuel, céments), near-field environment (canister, backfill, radionuclide migration), and natural analogues. Ail reviewed and accepted papers will be published by the Materials Research Society as a volume in the séries on the "Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste
