Acknowledgments
For my own education in the study of communities, I have called on many sources, including dozens of outstanding guest speakers and organizations that have hosted me and my students over the years, and whose passion about communities is an inspiration to all of us. I am particularly indebted to three American University colleagues: Mark Sherman, who proposed and outlined a Washington Semester program on communities; former Washington Semester Dean David C. Brown, who supported the creation of the program; and Heather Heckel, who, as a valued and generous coteacher, provided invaluable advice on this manuscript. In the early days of learning about community, I was fortunate to benefit from the support and advice of two colleagues who think outside the box: Bobby Hackett and Dan Butin. Robert Egger, a loyal colleague, also thinks outside the box in ways that has caused me and my students to think about communities far more creatively. I am particularly grateful for the support, cogent thinking, and always sound advice of Peter Levine and the late Liz Hollander. Finally, this book in its present form would not exist without the critical thinking of my son, Daniel Kravetz, and editorial genius of my husband, Eric Kravetz.
