Varicella zoster infection in an infant receiving chemotherapy: case report A 21-month-old girl was vaccinated with live varicella zoster virus vaccine (attenuated Oka strain) [dosage not stated]. One week later, she began cytotoxic chemotherapy for neuroblastoma [chemotherapeutic agents and dosages not stated]. About 5 weeks after vaccination, she developed skin lesions which persisted despite treatment with aciclovir. Cultures from the lesions were consistent with the Oka strain of the varicella virus, and were found to have a high level of resistance to aciclovir. She received foscarnet, but her varicella did not fully resolve until chemotherapy was discontinued. Three months later, she experienced a relapse of neuroblastoma for which she underwent autologous stem cell transplantation without varicella reactivation. Bryan CJ, et al.
