Varicella zoster virus vaccine live Urticaria in an infant: case report A male infant [age not stated], who had a history of asthma and eczema, received live varicella zoster virus vaccine [Varivax; dosage not stated]. His mother reported that he developed a rash suggestive of generalised urticaria [time to reaction onset not stated]. He received oral prednisone for 2 days. At the age of 15 months, he was referred for allergic evaluation. Skin prick testing was positive for Varivax and intradermal testing showed a positive reaction to the Measles, Mumps and Rubella virus (MMR) vaccine. He received diphenhydramine for pruritus. Subsequently, he underwent an MMR graded-dose challenge without any adverse reaction. He subsequently tolerated other vaccinations. His history suggested the presence of serum IgE antibodies to gelatin. Rodenas M, et al. Urticaria after varicella vaccine: the need for a graded challenge.
