Mesenteric haematoma and anaemia: case report A 65-year-old man developed mesenteric haematoma and anaemia during treatment with warfarin for atrial fibrillation. The man presented with abdominal pain for the last three days. His medical history was significant for atrial fibrillation, for which he had been receiving warfarin [dosage and route not stated]. A physical examination revealed a bluish discoloration of approximately 5 × 5cm over his right flank. An abdominal CT scan (transverse section) revealed large mesenteric haematoma (8 × 8 × 6cm) with adjacent mesenteric fat stranding. A laboratory investigation revealed anaemia (Hb-7.2 gm/dL) and coagulopathy (INR 4.3). Eventually, he was diagnosed with heparin-related mesenteric haematoma and anaemia [time to reactions onsets not stated]. The man’s treatment with warfarin was therefore stopped, and packed red blood cells and vitamin K therapy were initiated. Subsequently, his clinical condition improved without recurrence of symptoms or further fall in Hb. Sahu KK, et al. Mesenteric hematoma: Challenges in diagnosis and management.
