Oesophageal fistula and pneumonia: 3 case reports

In a retrospective study of elderly patients aged ≥ 76 years treated between January 2009 and May 2018, 3 patients [sexes and exact ages not stated] were described, who developed oesophageal fistula or pneumonia during treatment with docetaxel for oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma [routes, durations of treatment to reactions onsets and outcomes not stated]. The patients, who were diagnosed with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, started receiving radiotherapy 5 days per week for a total dose of 60Gy along with concurrent chemotherapy including docetaxel 10 mg/m2 weekly for 6 consecutive weeks. Subsequently, one of the two patients developed pneumonia (n=1), and the remaining two patients developed oesophageal fistula. Consequently, the patient’s radiotherapy with docetaxel were discontinued. Kawamoto T, et al.
