Mycobacterium bovis BCG infections in infants and children: 15 case reports Fifteen children who had received BCG vaccination developed BCG infections with various sites of involvement. The children were identified from 19 clinical specimens of suspected BCG infection in childhood tuberculosis cases. They had been vaccinated with the Tokyo-172 strain BCG vaccine as part of the neonatal immunisation programme [dosages not stated]. Following DNA testing of the samples, 15 children (6 girls and 9 boys) aged 1–9 years were found to be infected with M. bovis BCG, with the same spoligotype as the Tokyo-172 vaccine strain [times to reaction onset not stated]. The children were diagnosed with osteitis/osteomyelitis (8 patients), suppurative lymphadenitis (3), distant subcutaneous abscess (2), injection-site abscess (1), and disseminated BCG infection (1).
