Feature articles in the Journal of Medical Ultrasonics Yoshiki Hirooka1 Received: 12 October 2020 / Accepted: 14 October 2020 © The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine 2020

The Journal of Medical Ultrasonics (JMU) takes submissions of papers in a wide range of topics in every field of basic and clinical research, and papers that are worth publishing are selected after thorough review of the contents. However, the contents must be related to medical ultrasonics. This is the distinguishing characteristic of JMU, and we take great care not to lose the identity of JMU that we have built up over the years by publishing papers unrelated to medical ultrasonics. As such, our policy has been to reject general submissions of papers that do not have a focus on medical ultrasonics. Meanwhile, our goal for feature articles has been to publish articles that lead directly to our readers writing English papers in the field by exposing them to a number of review articles. The feature published in this issue titled “Diagnosis and assessment of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis using ultrasound elastography” was conceived by Prof. Kazushi Numata and includes a review article related to medical ultrasonics, as well as a review article about magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is fast becoming the gold standard for the diagnosis of these

diseases in the US and elsewhere, and a review article on the pathology of these diseases, which is thought to be essential knowledge for understanding ultrasound images and MRI images. Of course, when we receive a proposal for a feature, it is closely scrutinized by the Editorial Board. Feature articles should also have a focus on medical ultrasonics, and they must deliver the maximum value as a feature while minimizing information not related to medical ultrasonics. Feature articles are selected for publication via a process in which field-specific Associate Editors first go over potential articles, after which they are reviewed by the entire Editorial Board. The JMU Editorial Board will continue to give its utmost effort going forward to improve the status and presence of JMU in the world as the English-language journal of The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine.
