Olanzapine Diffuse brain oedema secondary to generalised seizures caused by acute hyperglycaemia: case report

A 57-year-old woman developed diffuse brain oedema secondary to generalised seizures caused by acute hyperglycaemia during treatment with olanzapine for depressive psychosis. The woman was admitted with serial generalised seizures and unconsciousness. Her Glasgow Coma Scale score was 7 points. Anamnesis revealed that she was diagnosed with depressive psychosis and had been receiving treatment with olanzapine tablet [dosage and route not stated]. CT scan revealed diffuse brain oedema. Laboratory investigation revealed hyperglycaemic state and a post-generalised seizure activity. These findings were consistent with transient diffuse brain oedema, hyperglycaemia and generalised seizures associated with olanzapine [duration of treatment to reactions onset not stated]. The woman was treated with calcium chloride/potassium chloride/sodium chloride [Ringer’s solution], anti-oedematous, antiepileptic and antidiabetic medications. Within 48 hours, her health status had improved. Shala V, et al. Diffuse brain edema as a result of generalized seizures caused by acute hyperglycemia, from new introduced olanzapine therapy.
