Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: case report A 29-year-old man developed neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) during treatment with olanzapine. The man, who had psychosis and mental retardation, started receiving oral olanzapine 15mg [frequency not stated]. He developed features of NMS including altered sensorium, generalised rigidity, increased BP and a high fever [duration of treatment to reaction onset not stated]. Olanzapine was withdrawn, and the man was treated with bromocriptine, ropinirole, baclofen and supportive care. Within a week, he showed significant improvement. Subsequently, he was started on aripiprazole. Author comment: "Our patient had an additional risk factor of mental retardation for developing NMS after taking olanzapine which has a rarity in itself." Singh TB, et al. Olanzapine induced neuroleptic malignant syndrome in a case of mental retardation with psychosis. Indian Journal of Psychiatry 55 (Suppl. 1): 803084130 S118, Jan 2013 [abstract] - Unknown
