Oesophageal ulcer in an elderly patient: case report A 75-year-old woman who had been receiving alendronic acid weekly [dose not stated] for 2 years for the prevention of osteoporosis was referred for dysphagia. A shallow ulceration was observed in the upper oesophagus during an oesophagoscopic examination. The ulceration improved without requiring treatment. However, a circumferential ulceration with a severe stricture was revealed in the same area during a follow-up oesophagoscopic examination 6 months later. Alendronic acid tablets were discontinued and the oesophageal ulcer healed. To relieve her dysphagia, she required 7 sessions of balloon dilation over 6 months. Ueda K, et al.
