FEV | Algorithm to Determine Vehicle Weight FEV has developed a software system for determin ing vehicle weight in real time. This allows accurate operating strategies to be produced for everything from energy management to navigation and charg ing. The ability to identify environmental influences and the load that the vehicle is carrying at any given time makes it possible to provide precise forecasts

of the vehicle’s electric range and the ideal route to take. In addition, a new European Union directive specifies that from May 2021 all commercial vehicles registered in the EU must be fitted with a device to determine the weight of the cargo on board. The software system developed by FEV evaluates the vehicle’s existing sensor data, correlates it and com

pares it with a dynamic vehicle model that is also based on sensor data. As a result, the system is both affordable and flexible and can be integrated into any small car or truck. The algorithms are cur rently undergoing further development and valida tion to prepare them for use in the next generation of production models.

ZF | Camera with 100° Field of View

ZF is launching version 4.8 of its S-Cam front-facing camera with a 100° field of view and improved image processing technology from Mobileye. S-Cam 4.8 will first be intro duced in the new Nissan Rogue in the USA. According to the company, the expansion of the horizontal field of view helps above all on tight bends and at intersections, as the front camera can, for example, detect objects passing in front of the vehicle at an earlier stage. This offers customers the opportunity to improve functions such as automated emergency braking systems for pedestrians and cyclists. The camera also has a high system performance in lane recogni tion and lane keeping. The manufacturer says that the camera also offers the prospect of more semi-automated driving and convenience functions, such as highway driving assist and traffic jam assist. ZF offers these technologies across the full spectrum of passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Mahle has introduced a thermal management condenser for hybrid and electric vehicles that helps to speed up the charging of the traction battery. According to the company, the new development has a higher power density than previous models. As part of the cooling system, the condenser, together with other components, ensures that the battery is cooled during fast charging and is reli ably protected against damage. At the same time, it also provides sufficient cooling capacity for a comfortable temperature in the cabin without taking up additional installation space, Mahle says. Due to an improved production process, the condenser has a flat ter design. It is lighter, less susceptible to corrosion, and requires less refrigerant. The company says that its holistic approach of optimizing the interaction between all components increases bat ter
