Porsche | Mahle | Trumpf | Zeiss | 3-D Printed High-performance Pistons

Together with Mahle, Trumpf and Zeiss, Porsche has developed high-performance pistons for the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The pistons are assembled from 1200 layers within 12 h by means of 3-D printing using the laser-metal fusion process. This process, which is also used for rapid prototyping, makes it possible to reduce devel opment time by 30 %. The bionic design, in which significantly less material is used, reduces the weight of the piston by 10 %. According to Porsche, a reduction of up to 20 % would be conceivable. In addition, cooling channels could be introduced, which lowered the temperature in the piston ring area by 20 °C. Thanks to the lower weight of the components, the engine speed of the six-cylinder boxer engine could be raised by 300 rpm, which increased the peak power of the unit by 22 kW. For cost reasons, the process is only used in prototype production and racing in the short term; in the medium to long term it may also be used in small- series production.

Vibracoustic | Active Hydraulic Engine Mounts

© Vibracoustic

In order to reduce the vibrations occurring in combustion engines, Vibracoustic has developed hydraulic engine mounts that are designed to reduce noise by up to 20 db. The active system consists of a hydraulic engine mount with actuator, an acceleration sensor and an Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The sensor measures the excitations, the ECU calculates in real time the necessary compensating movements in a frequency range of 20 to 200 Hz and sends them to the actuator within the active hydraulic mount. For low-frequency, high-amplitude road excitations, it operates in a fluid-damped manner like a conventional mount. The active function is only used for low-amplitude engine excitation. Here, the actuator moves up and down to control the internal pressure of the fluid and to adjust the dynamic stiffness of the bearing. Active vibration control can also be used for hybrid and electric motors.

Hyundai | Top Engine for the i10 With the i10 N Line, Hyundai is launching a sporty version of its compact car on the market. A turbocharged 1.0-l three-cylinder gasoline engine (bore × stroke: 71 × 84 mm), which generates a maximum of 74 kW at 4500 rpm and 172 Nm torque at 1500 rpm, is used exclusively in the top model. The engine is certified in accordance with the Euro 6d emissions standard and is equipped with a gasoline particulate filter as standard. The only transmission option for the frontwheel drive model variant is a manual fivespeed manual transmission.

Mercedes-AMG | Flat Plane V8 in the GT Mercedes-AMG has presented the new Black Series top model of its super sports car GT. The revised 4.0-l biturbo V8 gasoline engine develops up to 537 kW (6700 to 6900 rpm) and 800 Nm maximum torque (2000 to 6000 rpm). The main difference is a flat crankshaft where all crankpins are on a common plane (flat plane) with an offset of 180° (firing
