Quetiapine Dysphagia: case report A woman in her forties [age at reaction onset not clearly stated] developed dysphagia during treatment with quetiapine. The woman, who had bipolar affective disorder and a learning disability, was admitted to the psychiatry ward. About 4 months prior to admission, she had been switched from lithium to valproate semisodium and from olanzapine to quetiapine 300mg daily [route not stated] because of excessive sedation and thyroid function concerns; at admission, she was also receiving carbimazole. A couple of days after admission, her valproate semisodium dose was increased. Her quetiapine dose was gradually titrated up to 750 mg/day in two divided doses. Two weeks after admission, she developed symptoms of dysphagia; a barium swallow confirmed dysphagia. Quetiapine-induced dysphagia was suspected. Quetiapine was gradually switched to olanzapine. Her dysphagia resolved and did not recur. She was discharged receiving olanzapine and valproate semisodium. Author comment: "We are reporting a case of Quetiapine induced dysphagia in a mentally retarded woman with bipolar affective disorder". Vohra AK, et al.
