Aim of the Book Abstract The Gram-positive bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, the pneumococcus, is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide and considered a serious threat in today’s public health. It is a major contributor of severe diseases such as pneumonia and bacteremia and the main etiological cause of bacterial meningitis. All these diseases are defined as invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD).
