Aripiprazole Pathological gambling and compulsive eating: case report A 64-year-old woman developed an irresistible compulsion to gamble and to eat during treatment with aripiprazole for schizophrenia. The woman had a 31-year history of schizophrenia that had been managed with pimozide. She was subsequently switched to aripiprazole starting at 10 mg/day for months and then 15 mg/day. Six months after the dosage increase, she experienced a compulsive urge to gamble that far exceeded her previous habit (from $1–$2 per session up to $700 per session). She also experienced a compulsive urge to eat, gaining 9kg. Ziprasidone was substituted for aripiprazole and 1 month later the woman’s urge to gamble ceased and her weight decreased by 2kg. She refused a rechallenge with aripiprazole Author comment: "Aripiprazole is a novel antipsychotic with D2-blocking properties in hyperdopaminergic and D2 agonist activity in hypodopaminergic states. The present case suggests that in some patients aripiprazole may also have D3 agonist activity." Roxanas MG. Pathological gambling and compulsive eating associated with aripiprazole.
